About Hawaii
History
Comprising eight islands that span 1,600 miles in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is known for pristine white beaches, tropical climate and lush vegetation.
Hawaii is the newest of the 50 U.S. states. Hawaii received statehood on August 21, 1959. It is also the only state not located in the Americas and the only state located in Oceania.
It is the northernmost island group in polynesia, and does not observe daylight savings time. Most of the state’s revenue comes from tourism.
The main attractions are swimming, scuba diving, hiking volcanoes, and fresh produce. Hawaii is one of the most expensive states to live in, for example, living on the coast of Oahu is a full 30 percent higher than the national average.
Hawaii is the 8th smallest state and the 11th least populous. However, it is the 13th most densely populated of the U.S. 50 states.
The state's coastline is 750 miles, which is the 4th longest after Alaska, Florida and California.
Population
As of 2014 estimates, Hawaii has over 1.4 million residents.
Tourism is an important part of the economy, with 6.4 million visitors annually with $10 billion in expenses.
The Hawaiian population is now only made up of about 10% native Hawaiians.
Crime Rates
In terms of crime, Hawaii is about the same as the national average.
Violent crimes are much lower than the national average at about .01 per 1,000 residents; however, property crime is higher at 34 per 1,000 (the national average is 29).
Since most of the state’s population is centered in just a few concentrated areas, Hawaii has a higher rate of crimes per square mile than the national average.
Finding the Best Home Security Systems in Hawaii
Hawaii has a higher-than-average property crime rate, so a good home security system will go a long way in protecting your home and family.
One thing to be aware of is that good home security systems prevent burglars from entering your home, but the best home security companies protect your possessions and family from more than just burglars.
For example, because of obvious weather conditions, flooding can be a serious risk. Many smart home security companies will offer smart thermostats, flood sensors, and other alarms to alert you of any hazardous conditions.
The best home security system available in Hawaii is Vivint Smart Home.
